Affordable SEO Package Keyword Research 101

Let me be as upfront about this as I possibly can. A long time ago before Affordable SEO Package was even a thought in my mind, keyword research was not a huge problem for me. Not at all. Much later on, I found out that the reason for my “assumption” was because I was not doing it right, and as a direct result of not researching keywords properly, my search engine results suffered terribly. Now I am here at Affordable SEO Package trying to teach you how to avoid what I went through. How ironic!

From my past experiences, keywords were too broad, too many long tail keywords, and I was also selecting keywords that were already heavily dominated in the search engines that would either take far too long to even begin to dominate, or were just not profitable at all.

Keyword Research is always the beginning of your project, it is what will not only define your site content, but most importantly, the kind of visitor that you are wanting to attract to your website. And these keywords can determine anything from site content, to whether your users are readers or buyers. Keywords are simply that powerful!

One mistake that I see far too often is that people just randomly pick a topic and try and work with it. Bad move!

Let’s say that Joe, who is a fanatic for Hiking, and loves to travel the Tasmanian South West Wilderness (If you haven’t seen that place yet, you must see it sometime, it is amazing!). Joe would like to create a website about his travels, so as he is in a hurry, he chooses the keyword “South West Tasmania” and works around that.

Can you see the problem here? Well, for one, it is a very broad keyword. In South West Tasmania, there is a lot to see, there are wineries, snow fields, waterfalls, old rustic townships, and some of the most rugged terrain that you have ever seen. If someone found Joe’s website in Google, they may be looking for wineries, but have instead found a website detailing his travels along the Western Arthur Range. By the way, if you havent seen South West Tasmania yet, believe me, its worth it!

There are plenty of tools available out there that will allow you to do good keyword research. On the free side, you have Google AdWords Keyword Research Tool, which although it is not highly detailed, it is handy to see what kind of competition there is amongst keywords, and what kind of demand there is for a certain keyword in the search engines. I personally don’t use this tool as it is not anywhere near as detailed for my needs.

On the other hand you have tools such as Market Samurai which offers an up to date examination of keywords and their popularity. There is also “Brainstorm It” which is included in the Site Build It (SBI!) package, which is second to none in comparison of keyword research, giving accurate and up to date results for keyword popularity, keyword demand and profitability. Tools like these do indeed make keyword selection a bit harder (as a lot more thought is involved when you know what you are up against), however the efforts do not come without reward. There is no chance competing in a niche if you can’t balance the time and effort that you want to put into dominating your niche.

Some resources for you with relation to Keyword Research:

Site Build It – Contains the Brainstorm It Tool, plus other researching training material and resources

Market Samurai - Dedicated keyword research tool. Free trial version available, software is pricey but is very worthwhile.

Google Keywords Tool – Free service provided from Google Effective for very basic keyword research, but extremely limited information to work with.

As always, if you have anything to add in relation to Keyword Research, just comment below, and I will look into it. You can also join the mailing list for more regular info on topics such as these!

Good luck!
