SEO Training Tier One – Your basic guide for Effective SEO Optimization

As a webmaster, Search Engine Optimization is my primary focus. A lot of people underestimate the definition of SEO, assuming that it is more of a limited term referring to keywords, and content, however SEO extends much further than the webpage. You see, there is on page and off page SEO. How keyword rich and well optimized our page is, and how well organized and optimized our offsite marketing and promotion is.

Today, I will be talking about my first step in any successful SEO campaign. Keyword Generation and Marketing.

This method extends from both on page SEO to off page SEO. Known to all webmasters, initial keyword selection is a tedious task. The problem here is that we are all masters of our own domain, we know all the technical jargon associated with our niche, however, are we really that naive to believe that newcomers to our niche will be searching for our domain using the same technical jargon that we use? This is where a huge amount of research comes into play. First, you need to identify the product that you are promoting, the associate that with keywords. Personally, I can’t pry myself away from Google’s Keyword Tool for that long at a time, it has up to date statistics that relate to keyword popularity, and will give you an idea of what kind of keywords you want to target.

I Love SBI!Once you have identified your keywords, it’s time to build your site, and create keyword rich content based around those primary keywords. I would like to take a minute to introduce you to the concept of secondary and tertiary keywords. Secondary keywords will generally relate to your main content, but will be a slight variant of your main content. Something that could pick up visitors to your site, and that you would also want to emphasize on site. In your meta description, you would want to use these keywords, and emphasize them with the <h2></h2> tags. Tertiary keywords relate to the more obscure keywords that you may find in your keyword trail (much more obscure keywords that are otherwise ignored). A good service and resource for picking these links up is located at Hit Tail. They provide a cheap and effective service that locates the keywords in your link trail, and you can then generate further traffic to your site using these keywords, and generating relevant keyword rich content on site. It is said that a site that places primary focus on all keywords in their hit tail will in fact generate more traffic than their primary keyword. Personally, I havent had the chance to delve into this kind of experiment just yet, but it is on the cards, and you can expect a report on this when this happens.

Now, this is basic on page SEO, and whilst there are a few more things that could be done, this article is meant to be more of a rough guide than anything. There are things that you will learn while doing this, and one of those that I will mention now is the term “keyword stuffing”. What this refers to is when a webmaster picks way too many keywords, and stuffs them into their meta tags ad description. Why is this bad? For one, you want to focus on quality rather than quantity. This will only make the search engines confused, and less inclined to target your main keywords, and can also result in your site being dropped by search engines. Keyword stuffing can be referred to as being a “black hat” technique, which in most instances, you will want to avoid.

So, you have your website optimized, and you are ready to focus on off page SEO. What is off page SEO? It is the process of providing the internet with other content that either links back to your site, or links between itself in order to generate natural backlinks and targeted traffic. Personally, I work on a three tier system with my off page SEO, and it is a very intricate process that can take a very long time, and can cost a lot of money. I am all about cost effective, so any products that I refer to in this article will be as cost effective as you can find, and are tried and tested by myself.

First step in any off page SEO campaign for me is to begin my article marketing campaign. Now, I hear a lot of talk from people who submit their articles to various directories, even hundreds at a time as a means of gaining exposure, and this is extremely cost effective, and at the same time, not necessary. Your goal here is to pick those directories that are frequently targeted, and that will generate traffic. Ezine Articles is the top directory of these articles, and has extremely high quality control. I suggest that you submit your best content to Ezine Articles, that relates back to your primary keywords, and some of your secondary keywords. To compliment your Ezine Articles, I would also suggest using a tool called the “Content Spooling Network” in order to further distribute variations of your articles to other article directories. I recommend submitting to at least 20 other article directories for maximum exposure, and refer to your main keywords and secondary keywords when doing this. These articles need to be variations, which Content Spooling Network will do for you through the addition of appropriate tags in your content.

What is the bonus of submitting to article directories? Along with other people who frequent article directories, these articles are there for the purpose of being reproduced on other websites when webmasters are in need of other content. This is great news for you, as webmasters are required to keep your credit link in the article. If somebody likes your article, then they will be able to find you, and read more.

One thing to remember with submitting articles is that too hard and too fast can be a problem. A service such as Content Spooling Network will  naturally slow release all articles, as to make your websites progression up the ranks look much more natural, which search engines absolutely love! As an added bonus, do not forget to social bookmark your articles, and use the free Pingler tool. A great tool for mass adding content to social bookmarking sites is OnlyWire. They have free and paid services, personally, I use their free service and provide a backlink to them. The beauty of this is that their backlink allows users to bookmark your content as well, so there is nothing bad about this.

It used to be a much more effective approach to submit your site to blog and website directories, the truth is that these days, there are a lot more of these so called “Link Farms” out there that provide back links that just aren’t that valuable here. The key of effective off page SEO is to provide quality backlinks that will drive further traffic. We will still look at submitting to a further hundred or so directories, however if we are looking into methods that are cost effective, not only financially but time wise, then I would suggest using a tool called Directory Maximizer. This tool enables you to easily submit gradually to anywhere up to 1253 quality web directories, and will provide you plenty of one way links. As could be guessed, all of these links should be pointed at your site itself, which should provide targeted one way traffic for you.

Why should we pay for a service like this? As with the article submission, it is about time vs cost effectiveness. Would you rather be spending months submitting to directories this slow, of would you rather pay a very small fee to be listed on 200 quality directories? The same with your articles. These are extremely time consuming to submit. Submitting to 20 directories should be a daily task, and doing this manually will take all day to complete. You have other SEO methods to focus on, such as the second tier which I will talk about in the next article.

The last part that I would like to discuss refers to the whole “pre-sell” concept. You want your new users to get to know who you are, and you want some form of identity. If your users are to continue to return to your site, and if they are to purchase the products that you offer on site (either your own of through affiliates), you need to start building rapport right now. There are plenty of ways to do this. The one way that I can’t recommend enough is to start getting to know people on forums such as Digital Point, and Warrior Forums, and offer insightful help to others. Demonstrate that you really do know your stuff, and attract visitors to your site through backlinks in your signature, and through posts. This particular gap can be filled via various means, there are more aggressive methods that I have heard of that work brilliantly, but this method is also very effective. Not only will you generate more valuable backlinks, but you will, very early in the piece, start to generate quality targeted traffic that speak for themselves. As an example, I did a write up on Digital Point recently about one of the websites that I run apart from this one. Instantly, because people believe in me at Digital Point, I started to receive a constant flow of users through to the site, and other people sending me messages asking for help in relation to the content that I publish. This shows that trust has been earned, and that you are getting off on the right foot.

There are plenty more things that we can add to tier one. In a nutshell, I like to refer to tier one as being old fashioned SEO, the art of generating a network of backlinks, and organic results. Over the coming days, I will be posting about Tier two, and the results that you can achieve through the “new internet and “web 2.0”. This is where everything really starts to fall into place, and make sense. This is when the traffic will start to come running for you, so stay tuned for this.

If you are after a quick information hit, I would like to talk about someone by the name David Jenyns, who has been extremely valuable to me in my short career in SEO. David is the author of the SEO method, which has in large part inspired my method, and is much more in depth than what I discuss on page. In part, the guy is a genius, and is able to dominate any chosen niche, you really should look into buying his method, it will change your life, and your outlook on SEO as a whole.
